Coffee from $3

Osprey opens at half past six because the charter crews are on the road at five and the first person through the door most mornings is a mate with salt on his boots. It is a narrow room on Osceola Street with the roaster in the back window, a counter of pastries from a bakery in Jensen Beach, and a bench outside where the dogs wait. The coffee is roasted on the premises twice a week and sold by the bag; the espresso is pulled by people who care, and the cold brew is the thing from May to October.

There is no food beyond the pastries and a breakfast sandwich, no table service and no Wi-Fi password on the wall, which is a decision. The point is to drink the coffee, read the paper from the rack and walk down to the river.

Mornings are the busy time; by noon it is quiet and by three the chairs are up. Osceola Street has free parking on both sides and the city lots are a minute away. The bench outside is the best seat in town between seven and eight.

Good to know

  • The breakfast sandwich sells out by nine on weekends.
  • Beans are roasted on Tuesdays and Fridays; the bags are freshest then.
  • No laptops at the counter, by request.
  • Dogs are welcome on the bench outside and have their own bowl.
  • Cash and card; the tip jar goes to the sea turtle hospital.
