The front came through on Saturday night, the wind went north-east at twenty knots and high tide on Sunday morning was at nine. We were at Blowing Rocks at half past eight, with the lot already half full of people who had read the same tide table.

By ten the wind had dropped and the show was over; by eleven the rock was a quiet shelf of pools again. The whole thing depends on the tide and the wind arriving together, and when they do it is the best half hour on the coast.
