Things to do

Fishing and charters

Stuart calls itself the sailfish capital, and from November to March the fish are a few miles off the inlet. The rest of the year the river and the inlet carry snook, tarpon, redfish and trout, and the causeways are lined with people catching all of them from the bank.

The charters here are fictional businesses placed at real docks. They are written the way a good charter would be run: a named captain, a clear price for the boat, a plain policy for bad weather, and bait and licence included. A real charter will tell you the same things if you ask.

You need a Florida saltwater fishing licence to fish from a boat or the shore unless you are on a licensed charter or pier. Non-residents can buy a three-day licence online or at any bait shop.

Sailfish offshore, snook in the river, bait on the causeway

Sailfish are released, not kept. Every charter in this guide tags and releases them, and most of the coast’s tournaments require it.
