Itinerary
Seven days
A family week on Hutchinson Island
A kitchen by the causeway, a beach a day, two museums, one paddle, one rainy-day plan and the sunset every evening.
Hutchinson Island is the family week because nothing is far: the beach is across the road, the museums are five minutes south, the causeway parks are at the door and the village across the bridge has dinner. This plan sleeps at the Causeway Condos, cooks most nights, and spends a little every day rather than a lot on one. The days are in the order that worked for us; the weather will reorder them for you.
Day by day
Keys, groceries, the causeway beach and the sunset.
The easiest beach on the coast, then the village market and an early night.
Bathtub Reef at low tide and the House of Refuge after.
A guided sunrise paddle for the children from six, the pool for the afternoon.
The car rack at the Elliott, lunch on the dune, the stingrays next door.
Hobe Sound’s empty beach and the tower in the park, then music in the village.
A slow morning at Stuart Beach, the Riverwalk and the last dinner on the dock.
Good to know
- The beach lots fill by ten on winter weekends; the causeway beach has room all day.
- From March to October the turtle rules apply at night: no lights, no holes, no chairs left out.
- There is no fuel on the island south of Jensen Beach; fill up in the village.
- The condo kitchen pays for itself by Wednesday; the Mangrove Market is the Saturday shop.
- Sunscreen, hats and a shade tent; the island has no natural shade on the sand.
Shorter stays work with any three of these days. See also the visitor information and the beaches.
