March is when the Savannas are at their fullest: the winter ducks have not left, the wading birds are in breeding plumage and the first swallow-tailed kites are back over the pines. The birding weekend is two days of guided walks from the Jensen Beach entrance at dawn and late afternoon, a Sunday canoe count across the marsh with the park’s boats, and a tally at the picnic shelter on Sunday afternoon that usually passes a hundred species.

Walks are free with park entry and need no booking; the canoe count takes twenty people and books out. Bring binoculars, water and a hat.

Good to know

  • Walks are free with the park fee; no booking needed.
  • The canoe count takes twenty and is booked through the park.
  • Mosquitoes are mild in March; long sleeves still help at dusk.
  • The education centre in Port St. Lucie lends binoculars on the day.

While you are there

Nearby for the rest of the weekend are Jensen Beach and the causeway parks.
